Buy this book, right now. A friend of mine (whose literary judgment I really trust) recommended Wuertz' debut novel to me and I devoured it in a little under two days. This is a breakout achievement for such a young author; Wuertz makes the Korean cultural narrative accessible to all of us and delivers searching, important commentary through the journey of her surprisingly relatable characters, whose stories she uses so deftly to paint for us a time and place in Korean society, politics and economic development that many of us would otherwise never discover. Everything Belongs to Us A Novel edition by Yoojin Grace Wuertz Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book was recommended by my friend and oh man.. I just couldn't put this book down! Wuertz really did a great job and I am already waiting for her next novel!
I picked up this book for the important historical and political themes, but what really drew me in was the intimate, nuanced, and sometimes heartbreaking drama between the main characters. Beautifully written.
This novel introduces a cultural moment in South Korea that was both surprising and enticing. However Wuertz slowly built up to climactic moments just to skip over them or mention them briefly. Overall a worth-while historical fiction with a disappointing plot.
A fascinating look into the lives of 3 different University students in 1970s south Korea. One poor, one middle class, and one rich whose stories connect through friendship, betrayal, and a love triangle. I was especially drawn to the story of Namin and her struggle through poverty and other circumstances beyond her control, never losing her drive and tenacity to finish University and become a doctor.
This book was amazing. I got lost in it, that for me is the best kind of book!
Great read from a new voice in the Asian American literary world. The novel is especially poignant as Grace Wuertz shares the historical significance of the struggles in South Korea during the1970's. The lives of each character is intertwined. However, you experience each character's struggle through their individual lenses on life given their different backgrounds. The novel is beautifully written and is a quick read. Looking forward to the next one from Wuertz.
I've always loved historical fiction, but seeing this book that takes place in South Korea was a jackpot for me! I had to order it immediately.
Growing up having heard many stories from my parents about Korean in the 70s, I felt a sense of nostalgia reading this novel. My parents grew up in very different socioeconomic statuses so I was able to relate to the two characters Namin and Jisun, who also come from different homes, background, and statuses. I love how author gives us glimpses of how people lived in Korean back then, through the interactions of the friends when they cross paths at Seoul National University. I also love that Wuertz chose to have the two girls (not boys/men) as the protagonists to show readers about the struggles and opportunities that were present in the 1970s. This further sheds light into how difficult things must have been back then, especially for females at prestigious universities in Korea trying to make something of themselves. A highly recommended book!!
