This was really not for me and not what I expected, but it was readable and I understand the appeal this type of story has for some readers.Reasons you may like this:
-If you love unlikable characters. The main character is suuuuper judgmental. She has a horrible mindset about sex, there is some girl hate portrayed, she's just a crappy character. I had no problem understanding that this was a character flaw though, and did not feel like the book was shining any of this in a good light. I felt the whole point of the book is how this model of "perfection" isn't perfect.
-If you love strange, dark fiction that leaves you with as many questions as answers.
-If you like thrillers that revolve around the question 'is this real or in her head?'
Reasons you may not like this:
-If you hate unlikable main characters.
-In fact, most of the characters are awful. There are microaggressions toward race, disability, and mental illness portrayed. Again, I felt that these were called out, but they are present. I really have no idea if any of the representation is accurate or problematic overall.
-If you are triggered by graphic descriptions of injuries (some self injury), medical procedures, or hospitalization.
-If you cannot easily suspend disbelief while reading. This book deals with a real thing in a very fictional way, which is made clear at one point, but if you can't get around this you probably won't like it.
-If you need concrete answers.
My thoughts:
I've read all of Mindy's books and this is not my favorite, but what I liked about it most was seeing more of Mindy's writing range. The style and characters are distinct from her previous books (it's less of a social commentary). I also liked how the book thoroughly explored its premise. It treats it as though it could be as the character sees it, as a medical condition, a psychological condition, or even none of the above. I did enjoy the ending, it packed that extra punch I needed for this genre.
However, because of the timing of when I read this, I was easily triggered by the medical and injury aspects and it was a very difficult read for me. I also would have preferred more development of side characters, especially the love interest. And though I don't automatically dislike unlikable characters, in this instance Sasha was just too unlikable for me most of the time. It was very hard for me to care about or be interested what was happening to her.
This really reminded me of Another Little Piece by Kate Karyus Quinn in some ways, so if you've read that book, your feelings on it may be a good gauge of how you'd enjoy this one.
Also of note, since all of Mindy's previous books deal with rape or sexual assault, it's worth noting that this one does not. That may make it a more approachable read for some (if you aren't triggered by the above things), or less so if you love that her writing usually tackles this.

This Darkness Mine Mindy McGinnis Books Reviews
Great book, definitely couldn't put it down!! The way the book ended makes me want a part two but overall as it being one book it was great
I love being able to buy books with just a click and have them appear on my phone.
I have a long list of friends' books I need to read, but somehow stumbled on Mindy's . Talk about a twisted teen romance! Forget falling for some boring vampire, this book will tear your heart out.
This was a great story. Could not put it down. On the edge of your seat. Messes with your mind.
This isn't an easy ready. Not sure about the blurb, but this is more of a psychological horror than anything else. The writing is as excellent as other McGinnis volumes and while the main character isn't supposed to be liked, her story is darkly vivid. Timely read for Halloween.
I wrote a long review on Goodreads marked as spoiler, but didn’t want to post here because reviews can’t be hidden. The story is very different from the blurb. I wouldn’t call it a psychological thriller, because I never experienced any fear or held my breath, however the Sasha’s psyche is at the cornerstone of the story.
I really loved a couple of this author's other books, but this one just didn't sit easily with me. The main character is purposefully a hard person to like, but I never got to a point where I understood her. That disappointed me because usually this author takes a character and draws a clear line to their sometimes twisted logic. This time it felt like mental illness wasn't as delicately drawn. The plot was incredibly ridiculous sometimes. I can enjoy a book that is mind candy, but I expected more subtlety from this author. It felt like cheap thrills won over character development.
This was really not for me and not what I expected, but it was readable and I understand the appeal this type of story has for some readers.
